Shed Removal in Dothan, AL

The backyard shed with a caved roof, the lean-to full of things nobody has looked at in a decade, the pile of tin and lumber where a building used to be. The crew clears all of it.

What This Job Is, and What It Is Not

A junk removal truck loaded with scrap metal, old lumber and debris cleared from a property in Houston County, Alabama

Start with the honest boundary. The crew hauls shed debris. We do not demolish a standing building. If the shed is still upright and structurally whole, taking it down is a demolition job for somebody with the right equipment and the right insurance for it. Once it is on the ground, the cleanup is ours and it is ordinary work.

In practice most of what we get called about is already halfway there. A roof that let go two storms ago, a floor that has rotted through, a lean-to that is standing mostly out of habit. The building has already decided, and somebody just needs the pile gone.

Two separate jobs, usually on the same day

A shed is really two problems. There is what is inside it, and there is the building itself.

  • Contents. Shelving, buckets, broken hand tools, bags of hardened concrete and fertilizer, garden hose, pots, rusted bicycles, mouse chewed cushions, extension cords, half a swing set, boxes that went soft years ago.
  • Structure. Tin roofing panels and the screws in them, 2×4 framing, plywood or particle board sheathing, floor decking, skids and runners, doors, windows, siding, shingles and felt.

Both go on the same truck. What we cannot take is the usual short list: paint, solvents, motor oil, pesticides, pool chemicals, propane tanks and anything with fuel still in it. Fuel cans have to be empty. Old tires turn up in sheds constantly and are worth flagging separately, because they are handled differently from everything else in the load.

Send one photo of the shed or pile from a distance and say whether it is down or standing. We come back with a clear price for the load, loading and cleanup included.

  • Free, no-obligation estimate
  • Contents and structure on one load
  • Tin, lumber and scrap metal sorted
  • Footprint raked for nails before we go

Your request goes to an independent local hauler, who contacts you with a quote. Junk Pickup Dothan does not do the hauling itself.

Wasps, Snakes and Wet Particle Board

Shed work has hazards that furniture work does not, and they are worth saying plainly.

Red wasps build under the eave and in the rafters, and in summer they are there whether or not you have seen them. Yellow jackets go in the ground at the corner of the floor. Snakes lie under a raised floor and in the shade behind stacked tin, which is exactly where hands go when the pile starts moving. Black widows are in the low corners of nearly every old shed. None of it stops the job, but it changes the order we work in.

The other surprise is weight. Particle board and OSB that have taken rain for years are nothing like the dry sheet they started as, and the same goes for a plywood floor on damp ground and for old shingles. A shed that looks like a light little building can make a load that is mostly water, which is why a photo of the pile helps more than the dimensions do.

Say if the building is down or still standing. That one line changes the entire quote. A photo from ten feet back answers it, and shows us whether a truck can get near the pile.

Nails, screws and the ground afterward

The part people forget is what stays behind in the grass. A torn down shed leaves nails, roofing screws, staples and shards of tin exactly where somebody is going to mow. Raking the footprint and going over it for metal is part of the cleanup. It is also why we would rather you not spread the pile across the yard before we arrive.

    The Concrete Pad Stays

Most sheds sit on one of three things: a concrete slab, a set of blocks, or skids on bare dirt. Blocks and skids come with us. A poured slab does not. Breaking up and hauling concrete is a different trade, a different set of equipment and a different disposal route, and we would rather tell you that now than on the day.

A slab that stays usually stays useful. People park a mower on it, set a smaller building on it, or leave it as a patio. If you want it gone, that is a demolition contractor, and the cleanup after them is again ours.

What the City Will Not Take

This matters for sheds more than for almost anything else. Tin, framing lumber, sheathing, shingles and floor decking read as construction and demolition debris, and the City of Dothan does not accept construction or demolition debris with normal collection. Tires are not accepted either. On top of that, trash goes out as one pile per residence, and a shed makes considerably more than one pile.

City rules change. Confirm what is currently accepted, and your collection day, with the City of Dothan before you put anything at the curb. There is a plain summary on our Dothan garbage and landfill guide, but the city is the authority on its own rules.

So the options are hauling it yourself over several trips, a container in the driveway for the weekend, or a crew loading it in one visit. We go through that tradeoff on the dumpster rental alternative page. The short version is that a container still leaves you carrying wet particle board across the yard in July.

    What Moves the Price

    FactorWhy it matters
Down or still standingThe crew hauls debris from a shed that is already down. A standing building needs demolition first
Size and how much is in itAn 8 by 10 storage building full of shelving is a bigger load than the same building empty
Wet materialSoaked particle board, decking and shingles weigh several times what dry ones do
Truck accessA back corner of the yard behind a gate means everything is carried. Drivable access is faster
Metal in the loadTin, fencing and scrap go to a different destination than general debris. Mention it
HazardsActive wasp nests or a floor nobody should stand on change how the day is planned

If the shed is part of a bigger clearout, put it all in one visit. Brush and limbs from the same corner of the yard are covered on the yard debris removal page, an old chest freezer that has been out there since the last move is on the appliance removal page, and if the house is going at the same time, see cleanouts.

We cover Dothan, Houston County and the surrounding Wiregrass towns. Send a photo of the pile and one of the way in, and use the form above or the contact page.

    Questions

    Shed Removal Questions

Will you tear down my shed for me?

No. The crew hauls debris from a building that is already on the ground. Taking down a standing structure is a demolition job for a different trade. Once it is down, the cleanup is ours.

Do I need to empty the shed first?

No. Contents and structure can go on the same load. Just pull out anything you want to keep and tell us if there is paint, fuel or chemicals in there.

What about the concrete slab underneath?

It stays. Concrete needs different equipment and a different disposal route. Blocks and wooden skids do come with us.

Can the city take shed debris at the curb?

Generally not. Tin, lumber and shingles read as construction and demolition debris, which is not accepted with normal collection, and a shed makes far more than the one pile allowed. Confirm current rules with the City of Dothan.

There are wasps and probably snakes in it. Still a job?

Yes. It is normal for an old shed and we plan around it. Tell us in advance so nobody finds out the hard way halfway through.

Will there be nails left in the grass?

We rake the footprint and go over it for nails, screws and scraps of tin before we leave. It is the part that matters if you mow there.
