Mattress Removal in Dothan, AL

A queen leaning against the garage wall since the new bed arrived, a box spring out on the porch under a tarp, a twin nobody in the house wants. The crew carries them out and hauls them off.

Bulky, Not Heavy, and Nobody Wants It

Two workers carrying a mattress up a ramp into a box truck outside a brick house, with boxes and an armchair set out on the lawn

A mattress is the item people get stuck with. A queen is not especially heavy, usually well under a hundred pounds, but it is five feet by six and a half feet of floppy material that will not fold and will not fit in a car. Carrying one down a hallway is mostly a fight with the shape.

So it goes in the spare room, the garage, or out on the porch where the rain finds it. A wet one is a different animal, because foam and cotton felt hold water and the weight climbs fast. That is usually when somebody starts looking for mattress removal in Dothan, AL.

What we take

  • Mattresses in every size, from crib and twin up to California king
  • Box springs, split box springs and low profile foundations
  • Memory foam, pillow top, hybrid and old innerspring mattresses
  • Bed frames, rails, headboards, footboards and bunk beds
  • Adjustable bases, including the motor and the power supply
  • Futon mattresses, daybeds, sleeper sofa mattresses and crib mattresses
  • Mattresses that are soaked, stained or have been sitting outside

The mattress and the box spring almost always go together, and the frame usually goes with them, because a bed is rarely replaced one piece at a time. Say up front how many pieces are going. Two bedrooms is a very different load from a single twin.

The curbside problem

Bulk items do get collected in Dothan, but they go out as a single curbside pile with real limits on it, one pile per residence. Whether a mattress qualifies on your street, how it has to be prepared and when it goes out are all worth checking before you drag one down the driveway and leave it a week.

City rules change. Confirm current bulk collection rules and your collection day with the City of Dothan before you set anything at the curb. We keep a plain summary on the Dothan garbage and landfill guide, but the city is the authority.

Apartments, rentals on private hauling contracts and addresses outside city collection each run on their own rules, which is one more reason mattresses sit around longer than anything else in the house.

Stairs, Doorways and Box Springs That Will Not Turn

The truck is never the hard part. The hard part is the twenty feet between the bed and the front door. A mattress flexes, so it can be walked around a corner and squeezed through a doorway on its side. A box spring does none of that. It is a rigid wooden rectangle, and a switchback stairwell that a mattress clears will stop a queen box spring cold.

There is an order to working around it. The mattress goes first, on its side, so the hallway is clear. Doors come off their hinges where the frame is the problem, which buys an inch and a half. Bed frames come apart at the rails. If a box spring genuinely will not make the turn, cutting the frame down is the last option and we ask first.

Upstairs bedrooms, bonus rooms over a garage and second floor apartments all add a walk down. That changes the time on site more than the number of pieces does, so mention it.

    Bed Bugs, Stains and Wrapping

Tell us if bed bugs are the reason the mattress is going. It does not stop the pickup, but it changes how we handle it. An infested mattress gets bagged or wrapped in plastic in the room it came from, before it goes down the hallway. Carrying an unwrapped one through a house is how a bedroom problem becomes a whole house problem.

The same goes for one that is soaked or badly stained. Wrapping keeps the carpet and the door frames clean and stops a waterlogged mattress dripping down a stairwell. Note it on the quote form.

    Recycling Versus the Landfill

On paper a mattress is worth recycling. The springs are steel, the padding is foam and cotton felt, the box spring frame is wood. Pulling those apart takes a facility built for it, and only a handful of states run funded mattress recycling programs. Alabama is not one, so the honest answer here is that most go to disposal.

Two things change the outcome. A mattress in genuinely good shape, clean, dry, no stains, no odor, no pest exposure, is occasionally placeable, though donation outlets are stricter about mattresses than about any other piece of furniture and many will not take them at all. And metal is metal, so where a bed frame or a set of springs can go to scrap instead of a landfill, that is the better route. We sort in that direction, but we will not promise an outcome that belongs to somebody else.

    What Moves the Price

Mattress removal is priced by the room the load takes in the truck and the labor it takes to get it there. The job is different at every house, but the factors are predictable.

    FactorWhy it matters
Number of piecesA mattress, box spring and frame is three items, not one. Two bedrooms is six
SizeA king takes noticeably more truck space than a twin, and a king box spring is often two halves
StairsEvery flight adds handling time, and box springs are the awkward part of a stair
Carry distanceA garage next to the driveway is quick. A back bedroom at the end of a long walk is not
ConditionSoaked mattresses are much heavier and need wrapping before they move
Wrapping and bed bugsBagging in the room adds a step, and it is worth it
What else is goingAdding the dresser to the same visit is cheaper than a second trip

    Combining It With Everything Else

Most mattress pickups are not just a mattress. The bedroom set goes at the same time, or the bed is the last thing left in a house being emptied. See furniture removal for couches, dressers and dining sets, home and estate cleanouts when a whole property is being cleared, and the appliance removal page for the old washer. One visit with a bigger load beats three trips.

We cover Dothan and most of Houston County, plus Ozark, Enterprise, Headland, Daleville and Ashford. Send photos, note any stairs, and use the form above or the contact page.

    Questions

    Mattress Removal Questions

Do I have to get the mattress out to the curb first?

No. Leave it on the bed if you like. Getting it out of the room, down the stairs and onto the truck is the part you are paying for.

Will you take the box spring and the frame too?

Yes. Mattress, box spring, foundation, rails, headboard and bunk beds all go. Bed frames come apart at the rails so they load flat.

The mattress has bed bugs. Is that a problem?

No, but tell us in advance. It gets bagged or wrapped in the room before it moves, so nothing gets loose in the hallway on the way out.

Can a mattress be recycled instead of thrown away?

Rarely in this part of Alabama. There is no statewide mattress recycling program here, so most go to disposal. Metal frames and springs can often go to scrap instead.

It has been out in the rain. Will you still take it?

Yes. A soaked mattress is much heavier than a dry one and usually gets wrapped before it moves, so mention that it has been outside.

Can you take several mattresses at once?

Yes. List the count and sizes when you ask and they go on one truck.
